Gaston Boys and Girls Club on Thursday, August 6, 2009; from 8 AM to 12 Noon, for one hundred (100) pre-registered youth, grades 2nd through 6th.
Terri Sewell, a Birmingham attorney and democratic candidate for the 7th Congressional district, is a strong advocate for the development of youth and is pleased to provide an opportunity for our youth to participate free of charge in a basketball clinic, where they can spend time working with and learning from collegiate level coaches. Sewell is a native of Selma, Al whose mother Nancy Sewell served on the Selma City Council and father, now retired Coach Andrew Sewell, coached at Selma High School for 30 years before suffering a series of strokes that left him in a wheelchair and caused his early retirement. Her father played at ASU and Coach Lewis Jackson and her brother, Assistant Coach Anthony Sewell are also participating. Coach Andrew A. Sewell will also be in attendance.
Sewell remarks, "Basketball is in my blood! I am just honored that these great coaches would join me in promoting this sport and giving our children this unique opportunity. I am also happy that my college friend Coach John Thompson would travel to Birmingham and join with these outstanding coaches, to participate in this clinic for our children, honoring my father. What a great tribute!"
The renaming of the Selma High School Gymnasium in the name of Sewell's father will take place on August 15, 2009 in Selma, AL. "The Coach Andrew A.
