Grants awarded to help in recovery from tornadoes
The West Alabama Regional Commission and Jefferson County Regional Commission were both awarded $100,000 to prepare disaster recovery plans in response to the April tornadoes.
U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham) announced the grant funding Thursday. The grants were awarded by the U.S. Department of Commerce through the Economic Development Administration for Jefferson, Greene, Hale, Pickens, Tuscaloosa and other Alabama counties.
“This funding will help in the recovery and rebuilding efforts in our communities that critically need assistance as a result of the April tornadoes,” Sewell said. “This grant will also allow our regional commissions to better prepare our communities for natural disasters.”
The money will be used to provide planning and technical help to communities affected by the tornado to promote recovery through coordination of resources and regional collaboration. Local governments will also get help in developing a disaster response and preparedness plan.
