Rep. Terri Sewell tours Bessemer storm damage

Rep. Terri Sewell joined local officials Friday, May 2 to see the devastation in Bessemer following Monday's EF-2 tornado.

Alabama officials continue to push for a federal disaster declaration for the state after tornados destroyed homes and businesses earlier this week.

Congresswoman Terri Sewell along with State EMA Director Art Faulkner the toured the damage in Bessemer. They first looked at the Timberland Apartments, where the damage was so bad, residents were forced out of their homes. Sewell says she came to see the destruction to support the disaster declaration.

Faulkner says if the state fails to get a declaration it will put more of a financial burden on homeowners and local governments to cleanup the debris.

The tour began at the Bessemer Civic Center at 9 a.m., which has been opened as a shelter for displaced families.
