Congresswoman Terri Sewell Calls on Colleagues to Step Up on Job Creation

Birmingham, AL—Today, Congresswoman Terri Sewell (D-AL) released the following statement in response to Republican attacks on President Obama’s handling of the economy:

“Last September, President Obama sent Congress a detailed jobs plan full of the kind of bipartisan ideas that would have put more Americans back to work. If Congress had passed it in full, the unemployment rate would be lower and our economy would be stronger.

While we were able to pass the payroll tax cut which is helping to put more money in every working person’s paycheck right now, we left many valuable parts of the President’s jobs plan on the table, and it is critical that we reconsider these items.

State and local governments have laid off 450,000 Americans—police officers, teachers, firefighters, military personnel, and homeland security workers.  I urge my colleagues across the aisle in Congress to allow us to work on a bill that will help the states and allow these public servants to continue doing their jobs in our communities.”
